Who is Wendy Hemingway?
Wendy Hemingway is the Chief Financial Officer of The League of Southeastern Credit Unions. Wendy graduated from Oakland University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources and brings over 25 years of experience in finance, accounting, and banking to her role. She has held numerous positions at various credit unions throughout the United States and was most recently with Citizens Banking Corporation. Wendy is dedicated to providing exceptional financial leadership and believes in the importance of giving back to her community.
What was her career journey to becoming the CFO of The League of Southeastern Credit Unions?
Wendy had a very successful career in finance and banking, before settling in her current role as the CFO of The League of Southeastern Credit Unions.
In 2000, Wendy founded Shadowood Properties, her first business. Wendy managed the entire operation of a property management firm by coordinating many business functions including human resources, property administration, and tenant relations. Wendy coordinated all activities with contractors and staff to ensure the smooth operation of the multi-unit residential apartments and single-family homes managed by the company.
What kind of work does Wendy do in her role as CFO?
As CFO of The League, Wendy oversees the organization’s day-to-day financial operations. She is responsible for monitoring and tracking budget performance, creating financial forecasts and reports, providing counsel on investment strategies and opportunities, guaranteeing compliance with government regulations, and conducting financial audits.
Wendy also plays an important role in helping to develop strategic initiatives for the board to consider when planning for the future.
What are some of the credit union initiatives Wendy has been involved in during her tenure at The League?
Wendy has been instrumental in helping the League develop innovative strategies to meet the organization’s goals.
Most notably, she spearheaded a project to create benchmarking tools that have enabled credit unions to measure their own performance against national trends and helped devise a comprehensive campaign outlining best practices for member credit unions.
Additionally, Wendy helped create the organization’s first loan pooling program which facilitates access to capital for small- and medium-sized businesses within The League’s member communities.
Why has it been important for Wendy to focus on credit union outreach and involvement within the community?
Wendy has made it her mission to bring the credit unions’ message of community outreach and involvement to local, state and national organizations.
She believes strongly in providing excellent financial services to members and guidance to all credit unions and works hard to find ways for them to achieve real success in their communities.
By engaging with leaders at the highest levels of government, business, education and philanthropy, Wendy has been able to secure valuable partnerships that have increased visibility for both The League of Southeastern Credit Unions, as well as for its member credit unions.
